Interview
K-aotic: What is your Favorite Part of Hockey Arena?
Esch: To be honest I'm not sure if I have a favorite part, but obviouslythere's something there with the game otherwise I wouldn't stickaround. I generally get bored with online games after 3 months butI've been with HA way past that, so there must be something there thatI like.

K-aotic: What is one thing that you did to get your team to where it is today?
Esch: My team is successful because I was demoted from division 1 beforelast season. I was able to hold my own for a couple seasons indivision 1, but then the competition became too great and my playersstarted to get too old, so I was demoted. So me winning first place indivision 2 is a bit misleading because of me coming from division 1.

K-aotic: If you could give one tip or pointer to a new manager, what would that be?
Esch: Don't do what I did. When your starting players get old enough tostart dropping in skill, make sure to have adequate backups on yourB-squad you can use to replace them. My A-squad is top heavy right nowbecause I didn't have younger players ready to replace them. This willbite me next season when I'm back in division 1 because my old playerswill need to be replaced and I won't be able to compete at that level.

K-aotic: Who is your teams biggest Rival?
Esch: I don't know if I have a real rival in this game. There are severalHattrick players that play this game like Toads On Ice and Vampyres,so we tend to be more competitive against one another than owners whodon't have a previous history with one another. Of course there couldbe teams out there who have a rivalry against me and I don't know it.

K-aotic: Anything else you can think of???
Esch: With all of the sports management games that I play online, I tend touse morbid team names just to make people scratch their heads. OnHattrick my team name is the "Slaughtered Jawas", so when I joined HAI continued this trend of murdering fictitious little characters andnamed my team "Muppet Massacre." My team logo is probably my favoriteone that I've ever created, because there's nothing funnier thanhaving Kermit The Frog with his hands behind his head getting ready todie execution style, heh.-->

Q&A #1

I recently asked some brand new or not so new, but struggling managers areas in which they needed help. As they respond, I will present their questions and my answers for others who will eventually have the same questions. If you have a question about something not covered in the guide or the HA 101 section of this site, please mail me or another NAT.

Q1: I'm trying to get younger players on my team but i was just wondering what kind of AI should i be lookin for and also how close should my secondaries be to the main attributes. ohh one other thing should i just buy u26 usa players because of the added 20% or will that not affect my bottom line too much.
A1: I would worry more about getting players with good quality and potential than with good AI. In fact, some of my best rising players were bought cheaply with very low AIs, but great quality and potential. That said, a good AI as a starting point can make up for a lower quality and potential. Without giving too much away on attributes since everyone has their own closely guarded system, I think the effect of secondaries is greatly overlooked by most. Also if two players are equal in AI, the one with 85% of his skills in a primary stat will usually go for much more on the unprotected market so it's a financial decision as well. Those 20% bonues definitely add up and will eat your daily profit if you're not careful. But don't ignore foreigners completely, if you see a good deal for a great player, take it. Just be more careful with average players than you would with Americans.

(For those wondering, I will try to do more than one question per article, but this was all I got for this time.)

HA Needs Your Help

Many people will ask, why should I donate money so they can make a profit? The truth is, this game is one of the rare things in life that is truly free. HA is not a bunch of profiteers. They have provided hours of fun for us, spending thousands of dollars on servers and countless hours coding. With an average number of sponsors of 5% of managers in each country spending about $10 a year, you can quickly do the math and see it doesn't add up.

To offset the cost, HA has created Sponsor Pack. While it offers no playing advantage, there are several fun and/or useful features which are described at http://hockeyarena-usa.blogspot.com/2005/05/value-of-sponsor-pack.html. With an average cost of 0.03 USD a day and every payment method imaginable both directly from HA and from the USA NAT team at http://hockeyarena-usa.blogspot.com/2005/06/purchase-hockey-arena-sponsor-pack.html there really is no excuse for not buying it. You can find the money (and probably more) by looking daily in any parking lot, street, or store.

If you have already purchased Sponsor Pack you can still help. The Americas Cup offers more Sponsor Packs as prizes than any other cup in HA. These packs are provided by the USA NAT team, but they must purchase these packs through HA like everyone else. This of course takes money. The USA NAT team takes donations on behalf of AC at http://hockeyarena-usa.blogspot.com/2005/06/donate-to-tournament-cup-prizes.html.
